The emergency occurred about 12:30 p.m. at the Buckeye Raritan Bay Terminal at 577 Smith St. in Perth Amboy, where the contractor was repairing a sewer.
The victim suffered trauma, an arm injury and possibly fractured ribs, according to initial unconfirmed reports.
A Special Operations unit made initial contact with the unidentified contractor, rendering first aid from below ground.
The patient was pulled out of the hole by 1:30 p.m. and taken by EMS to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, reports said.
Perth Amboy firefighters from Rescue Company 1 helped set up high angle rigging above the trench, lifting the victim via a "haul line" and sled, officials said.
